Laser Sailors,

Thanks to Larry Nociolo for the following write-up:

We had another big turnout Sunday on the Navesink. 16 Laser sailors played the shifts on a sunny afternoon in 4-10 Kt winds that initially came from the North, but persistently shifted West.  Students and coach battled out for the lead as Rob Grukos, Brendon Gillman, and Matt Geittig each claimed wins.  Peter Jones, who’s new to sailing this year, is not only closing the gap, but picked up a top-half of the fleet finish in one race.  Ever the coach, Matt generously offered on-the-water sailing tips to everyone between races.  Thanks Matt!  That camaraderie is what makes sailing at MBC such fun.

Robby Gearon was home from Boston Univ. and made his first appearance for the series.  He was glad to be back on the water after a month and a half rest and we can expect to see more of him during his break.
Thanks to all who helped out other sailors quickly launching and retrieving Lasers at the docks.  That cleared the way for the N10’s and their annual “John English regatta.”  Also, a shout out to all the RC volunteers.  At the end of the day, let’s remember to help the last RC person get the Carolina out of the water.  One note, we’ve been sailing in the basin recently, but for safety reasons we’ll be moving the Laser race course closer to MBC in future weeks as the water gets colder.

We had 26 sailors take part in our Fall Frostbiting Series with 14 of them “qualifying” by participating in at least one-third of all races. Special recognition goes out to the two sailors who competed in 45 or more races this series – John Suguy (50) and Talbot Pratt (45). Also, thanks to Thom Lee for serving as our official scorer (and unofficial photographer).

To recognize everyone’s participation and support in making this the best series I’ve been a part of, each person listed above will be given an award commemorating our series. They will be handed out by Larry Nociolo at the New Year’s Day Regatta, so be sure to attend…and spread the word.

The NOR for the Laser New Year’s Day Regatta is attached. Considering that we are getting 10+ boats every Sunday for frostbiting, I’m hoping we can attract a strong turnout from around the area. To help with attendance, we’ve made it a delayed start for those who like to sleep in or need to recover J. The “winter” series will kickoff in the New Year.

See you on the water!
