Bernard Friel, Rumson, sailing with wife Andreé won four of five races to capture their second Flying Scot Full Moon Regatta June 6th at the Monmouth Boat Club.
The Friels, two time defending MBC Club champions, who won their first championship in 2013, were almost unbeatable Saturday as they won the first three races. The regatta was sailed in changing conditions of light rain, clouds and sun and winds that peaked at 13-15 mph with a slight Navesink River chop. The Friels ended the day with eight points including a fourth place finish to go with their wins.
Dan Vought, Rumson, sailing with daughter Alexandra finished second with thirteen points including a pair of second place finishes and a win in race five sailed in falling winds.
Larry Nociolo, Fair Haven, with wife Eileen as crew were third with 15 points including third place finishes in the three afternoon races.
Thom Lee, Middletown, sailing with Melissa Pater finished fourth with 20 points followed by Marc Gordon, Atlantic Highlands, 21 points. He sailed with Phil Cardelfe as crew.
Thirteen boats came to the line for race one including eight in the championship fleet and five in the challenger group. Principal Race Officer Less Hathaway set long, windward-leeward courses in winds that blew from the north and northeast during the day. He ended the regatta with a triangle course in10 mph winds that challenged the fleet after a long day of racing.
Thirteen-year-old Topher Lucyk, Lincroft, sailing with his father Paul, took top honors in the challenger fleet with two firsts and two seconds in the five race regatta and eight points. Finishing second in the fleet was Alan Walkow, Parsippany, sailing with his father Alan Sr. followed by Brian Dellet, Belford, with Terry Murch as crew.
The Regatta was the 24th in the Flying Scot Full Moon series at MBC.
