It was a bit cool for a Tuesday Evening Series but all the other typical factors were there. Beautiful sailing, good racing, and good people. Winds went from moderate to light over the course of the evening and Les did a great job keeping the courses straight. Thanks Les!
Thom Lee won all the races (but that was just luck ;)). for complete results, visit monmouthboatclub.org/results.

Dale Barney and Bernard Friel come out on top in Opening Day racing.
Denis Farley led the Race Committee in running 2 races on a sunny opening day in winds that ranged from around 5 to 15 mph. Big shifts and pressure variations made for tricky sailing but Dale Barney and Bernard Friel figured things out a bit better than the rest of the competitors. Dale won both of the Lightning races while Bernard took a first and a second. For complete results, visit monmouthboatclub.org/results.
Thanks to John and Libby Vernazza for supplying pictures of the racing.
Floats In was a great success!
Thanks to all the members who came out to help get the club ready to start the season. The docks went in, two new ones were built, and tons of other things got done on a sunny but chilly and windy day.

The unseasonably warm weather and good wind brought out 17 sailors for “Winter Frostbiting” today.
Dan Vought continued his domination of the Winter Laser series by chalking up 4 wins in 6 races and Dave Watts jumped to the top of the N-10 leaderboard by winning 3 of the 4 races he sailed.
The big winners were everyone who came out on such a beautiful day. Along with the larger than usual number of competitors, there were plenty of people who stopped by the club to visit and spend time with friends and there was even a respectable crowd watching the racing from Marine and Riverside parks.
Long range forecast is calling for pretty nice weather next weekend as well. Hope to see you there. If you come to sail, remember, the water is still quite cold. Bring appropriate gear.

Laser New Year’s Day Regatta
Write-up from Larry Nociolo:
Mother Nature was kind to the recovering revelers at MBC’s 2017 New Year’s Day Laser Regatta: warm temps, sunny skies and winds dropping from 12 to 7 Kts as Thom Lee noted, “just as we were starting to get tired.”
Matt Goetting had an impressive win in the 14 boat field taking 5 of the 6 races. The tightest competition was for 2nd where Rob Gruskos edged out defending champ Dave Watts (sailing a Frankenstein boat) and Dan Vought. Larry Nociolo bested Thom Lee to pick up the last award commemorating MBC Laser fleet’s 40th anniversary. Brad Carpenter, Jackie Hall and Warren Walkow played do-si-do with the wind before race 1, then expertly ticked off the races and got everyone back before the winds died and dark rolled in.
Thanks to Eileen Nociolo and her many helpers for serving up homemade Chili and a bit of holiday wassail.
N-10 John English Regatta
Excerpts from Denis Farley’s Chilblain:
Frostbiting does not get much better than last Sunday as the wind and weather were great and there was a party after the sailing! The temperature was nearly 50 with bright sun, and wind that was strong and gusty but dropped as the day went on.
We managed three twice around windward-leeward courses. Denis Farley and Taugh Lynch tied with six points each and the tie break went to Denis with two firsts. Taugh won the other race. Randy Dickerson was 3rd overall. Pat Corr was celebrating his first day as a past MBC Commodore. A big thank you to Pat for two years of hard work.

Congratulations to Matt Goetting on winning the 2016 Fall Laser Series!
Matt finished up the series in style winning 5 of 6 races on the last day. Conditions started out with strong winds, light rain and unseasonably warm temperatures of around 60 degrees. Nice but you still didn’t want to go swimming. The ice from the previous cold weather had only melted recently. The wind moderated as racing progressed. Then, as the boats were being put away, a front came through with 30 – 40 mph winds.
To Matt’s credit, winning consistently across such inconsistent conditions is the mark of a truly great sailor!
No racing is scheduled for next week but the following week is the Annual New Years Day regatta. Always a great regatta and a great way to start the year.
Some statistics on the series…
- 42 races were held between October 30th and December 18th
- 24 people competed in the series
- 10 people finished enough races to qualify (21)
- Matt won with an average finish of 1.32

The day started blustery but the wind died down a bit by the last races. It was chilly too. Still, 14 Lasers opted to sail today. Matt Goetting won 4 of the 6 races and Chris Henkel won the other two. For complete results, visit monmouthboatclub.org/results.
